Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has left the Democratic Party and now identifies as an Independent, according to the publisher of her forthcoming book. The memoir, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, is slated for release this fall by Legacy Lit, a Hachette imprint.
The book recounts what Jean-Pierre calls “betrayal by the Democratic Party” and will detail internal tensions and the events leading to President Biden’s 2024 campaign withdrawal. Jean-Pierre criticizes the two-party system and encourages Americans to embrace political independence.
“I think we need to stop thinking in boxes and not be so partisan,” she said in a video posted to Instagram. She added she will support anyone who respects marginalized communities, regardless of political affiliation.
Jean-Pierre made history as the first Black woman and openly LGBTQ+ person to serve as White House press secretary. Gallup reported that 43% of U.S. adults identified as politically independent in 2023.
