Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who formerly served as Chief Assistant District Attorney, has been hired as the lead defense attorney for Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate charged with second-degree murder in the death of a UnitedHealthcare CEO. Known for her extensive experience in New York’s legal system, Friedman Agnifilo also serves as a CNN legal analyst and co-hosts the Legal AF podcast by MeidasTouch. Notably, her husband, Marc Agnifilo, represents rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
The case has drawn intense public interest, with many online sympathizing over widespread frustrations with denied medical care, surprise bills, and the complexities of navigating the healthcare system. Investigators allege that Mangione’s motives were rooted in similar grievances, outlined in a manifesto found at his arrest, where he described the killing as a “symbolic takedown” and a “direct challenge to its alleged corruption and ‘power games.'”
Initially represented by Pennsylvania attorney Tom Dickey, who is experienced in death penalty cases, Mangione has since brought Friedman Agnifilo onto his defense team. While the reason for the change is unclear, questions surrounding Dickey’s licensure in New York may have played a role. Dickey acknowledged he might need authorization to represent Mangione in New York courts, which could have complicated the case.
Mangione, who faces charges of second-degree murder, forgery, and firearm possession, is fighting extradition to New York. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have committed to expediting the process. Meanwhile, Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks confirmed efforts to secure Mangione’s transfer.
Public opinion on the case is polarized. While some condemn the alleged crime, others see it as a symptom of deeper flaws in the U.S. healthcare system and economic inequality.
