In a remarkable surge, nearly 40,000 people registered to vote within 48 hours after President Biden announced he would suspend his reelection campaign and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, according to Vote.org. The voting registration nonprofit reported that 38,500 new voters registered, marking the highest 48-hour registration period this election cycle. Of these new registrations, 83 percent came from individuals aged 18-34, underscoring Harris’s appeal among younger voters.
Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, highlighted the significance of this surge, emphasizing the importance of voter participation in a healthy democracy. This spike in voter registrations even surpassed the 34,000 new voters registered last September after Taylor Swift encouraged her followers to register.
Harris’s announcement has invigorated young Democrats and Generation Z voters, with the youth-led climate advocacy group Sunrise Movement’s communications director, Stevie O’Hanlon, noting Harris’s potential to significantly boost youth voter turnout. The vice president’s campaign has adeptly utilized social media platforms like TikTok, capitalizing on popular trends and memes to engage younger audiences.
Financial support for Harris has also surged. Within 24 hours of Biden’s announcement, Harris’s campaign raised $81 million, setting a new record for the highest 24-hour fundraising total of any presidential candidate in history. This impressive fundraising effort saw more than 888,000 donations from individual grassroots donors, 60 percent of whom were new contributors to the campaign.
