Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee against Donald Trump, according to an AP survey. Top Democrats quickly rallied behind her after President Joe Biden’s decision to drop his reelection bid. Prominent officials, party leaders, and organizations endorsed Harris, setting a new 24-hour record for presidential donations. State delegations, including Texas and California, confirmed their support, giving her at least 2,579 delegates, surpassing the required 1,976.

California Democratic Chairman Rusty Hicks noted unanimous support for Harris. However, the AP has not yet declared her the presumptive nominee, as delegates are free to vote at the convention. Harris expressed confidence in her campaign team and unity in her goals. President Biden, recovering from COVID-19, called in to support her, affirming his decision to step aside.

Harris, headed to Wisconsin for her first campaign event, must now pick a running mate and pivot Biden’s political operation to support her. Endorsements from key figures like Governors Wes Moore, Gretchen Whitmer, and J.B. Pritzker have solidified her position. If elected, Harris would be the first woman and first person of South Asian descent to become president. The Democratic National Convention will finalize the nomination process in August, featuring a virtual roll call.
