Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Sunday she is unsure Americans can trust the Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Donald Trump, warning that political retribution may be influencing prosecutions. “I don’t know if we can trust what’s coming out of the Department of Justice right now,” Harris told MSNBC, adding that it “pains” her as a former prosecutor to see the institution “targeting people because of who they are.”

Her remarks follow the recent indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James by federal grand juries in Virginia. Comey faces charges of obstruction and making false statements to Congress, while James was charged with bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution. Both deny wrongdoing.

The indictments came after U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert resigned, reportedly under White House pressure to pursue Trump’s political rivals. Trump later appointed aide Lindsey Halligan as interim U.S. attorney and urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute Comey, James, and Rep. Adam Schiff.

Harris accused Trump of leading a “vengeance campaign” that undermines the impartiality of the justice system.
