Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost the presidential election earlier this month, is reportedly exploring future political options, including a potential run for California governor in 2026 or another presidential bid in 2028. Politico reports that Harris has told allies she plans to “stay in the fight” and will spend the holiday season deciding on her next steps.
Harris, currently in Hawaii, is expected to speak out against President-elect Donald Trump and reaffirm her role within the Democratic Party. A source close to her stated, “There will be a desire to hear her voice, and there won’t be a vacuum for long.”
She will oversee Congress’s Jan. 6 session to affirm her election loss to Trump and leave office on Jan. 20, 2025. Harris has not announced whether she will attend the inauguration, although it is customary for outgoing leaders to do so.
Harris’s track record in California politics positions her as a strong contender for governor or the 2028 Democratic nomination. She has won three statewide elections and carried her home state decisively this month. Polls from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and Puck News-Echelon Insights show Harris leading potential competitors in both the governor’s race and Democratic primary.
Leaving office will mark the first time since 2004 that Harris is not in an elected role.
