Vice President Kamala Harris has called for an “immediate cease-fire” in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing the need during a speech in Selma, Ala. This stance reinforces the Biden administration’s efforts to negotiate a six-week halt in hostilities amidst the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. President Joe Biden has been a vocal proponent of the cease-fire, with the Israeli government recently indicating agreement to the proposal’s framework.
Harris is scheduled to discuss the cease-fire and humanitarian aid with Benny Gantz, a key figure in the Israeli war cabinet, at the White House. This meeting has reportedly caused tension with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who did not authorize Gantz’s visit.
Highlighting the dire conditions in Gaza, Harris criticized the inadequate humanitarian aid access and described the plight of families and malnourished children in the region. The Biden administration has increased its critique of Israel’s role in the humanitarian situation, especially following the recent killing of over 100 civilians during an aid event.
Amid escalating casualties, with the Palestinian death toll exceeding 30,000, calls for a permanent cease-fire have grown within the Democratic Party. Rep. Pramila Jayapal praised Harris’s statement and urged for substantial policy support to follow this advocacy.
