Justice Clarence Thomas has disclosed that Republican billionaire Harlan Crow covered his accommodations during 2019 trips to Bali and Sonoma County, amid increasing scrutiny of the Supreme Court and its benefactors. This admission was included in Thomas’ financial disclosure report released Friday, which covers 2023. Thomas revealed that Crow and his wife provided meals and lodging during these trips.
Thomas has faced criticism for accepting undisclosed lavish trips from Crow, whom he describes as a close friend. Thomas’ new filing indicates these omissions were “inadvertent.” The Supreme Court’s ethics practices have been under intense scrutiny, leading to the adoption of a formal ethics code last November. Justice Samuel Alito, who also faced similar scrutiny, received a 90-day extension for his financial disclosure report. Other justices reported significant earnings from book deals and gifts, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who received concert tickets from Beyoncé.
