On his final day in office, President Joe Biden granted pardons to his siblings, their spouses, and several allies, citing persistent partisan attacks against his family. The pardoned individuals include his brother James, sister Valerie, and their respective spouses, as well as public figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and retired Gen. Mark Milley.

Biden emphasized the pardons do not imply wrongdoing, stating they were necessary to protect against potential retribution from his Republican successor. None of the recipients had been charged with crimes.

The action follows Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter last month for tax and gun charges. Biden’s brother James faced scrutiny in a Republican-led impeachment inquiry accusing him of false statements and financial impropriety. House Democrats defended James, citing bank records that the transactions were loan repayments.

Presidential pardons for family members are not unprecedented, with similar actions taken by former Presidents Clinton and Trump.
