U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, already under scrutiny for blocking deportation flights under the Alien Enemies Act, has been randomly assigned to a new lawsuit alleging top Trump administration officials violated federal records law.

The suit, filed by American Oversight, targets five Cabinet members including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz. It alleges they discussed imminent U.S. airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthis in a Signal chat set to auto-delete, violating the Federal Records Act.

The chat came to light after Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly added to the conversation. The White House confirmed the messages occurred but denied they included classified information or war plans.

Boasberg is simultaneously presiding over a separate case in which the DOJ refused to disclose deportation details, citing national security. The Trump administration had previously defied Boasberg’s deportation order, sparking GOP calls for impeachment.

Boasberg has a history of rulings both supporting and opposing Trump, including ordering Mike Pence to testify in 2023.
