A New York judge denied President-elect Donald Trump’s request to overturn his guilty verdict, rejecting claims that presidential immunity protected his actions. Judge Juan Merchan ruled Trump’s conduct was “decidedly personal” and not official, aligning with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who argued the Supreme Court’s ruling on immunity did not apply. Trump’s attorneys claimed evidence tied to “official acts” should have been excluded, but the argument was dismissed.
Trump, convicted in May on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records, had his sentencing delayed indefinitely in November after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling. The case continues as Trump prepares for Inauguration Day.
