WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal judge has ordered prosecutors to hand over all records and evidence from the investigation into former FBI Director James Comey to a grand jury by Thursday. U.S. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick expressed concern that the Department of Justice “indicted first and investigated later,” according to The Associated Press.

Comey, who attended Wednesday’s hearing, is charged with lying to Congress about authorizing leaks related to the FBI’s probes of Hillary Clinton and the Trump-Russia investigation. Prosecutors allege he encouraged Columbia University law professor Daniel Richman to speak to reporters anonymously.

Fitzpatrick’s order compels the DOJ to provide all seized materials, including communications with Richman dating back to 2019 and 2020. The former FBI chief pleaded not guilty last month, claiming the case is politically motivated.

Comey’s lawyers argue that President Donald Trump’s social media calls for his prosecution show improper influence. Prosecutors countered that Trump’s posts are irrelevant to the case.

The ruling marks a pivotal moment in a politically charged trial that could test the Justice Department’s independence and credibility.
