A federal judge on Sunday ordered the Trump administration to respond to allegations that U.S. immigration authorities “willfully disobeyed” a court order halting the deportation of Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a Lebanese citizen on an H-1B visa.
Alawieh, a Brown University-sponsored assistant professor, was detained at Boston Logan Airport last week despite her approved work visa. Judge Leo T. Sorokin had issued an order Friday night mandating 48 hours’ notice before deportation, but Alawieh was placed on a flight to Paris before the ruling could take effect.
Attorneys argue the government had “actual notice” of the court order but ignored it, with Alawieh expected to be sent to Lebanon on Sunday. The Department of Homeland Security has not provided an explanation, while the State Department declined to comment.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the deportation, demanding Alawieh be “immediately readmitted” to the U.S. This follows the recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University protest leader and legal permanent resident, raising concerns about expanded deportation efforts under Trump.
