A Manhattan judge has ordered Rudy Giuliani to appear in court on Jan. 3 to address claims of contempt for failing to turn over assets to two Georgia poll workers who won a $146 million defamation lawsuit against him. Judge Lewis J. Liman also scheduled a Jan. 16 trial to resolve issues involving Giuliani’s Florida residence and sports memorabilia, including World Series rings.
Giuliani, disbarred and facing financial troubles, has resisted asset transfers, prompting repeated warnings from the court. During a November hearing, he interrupted Liman to deny wrongdoing, claiming he is a victim of “political persecution.” Giuliani’s assets include a New York apartment, luxury items, and a Mercedes.
In response to mounting legal costs, Giuliani launched a GoFundMe page, claiming he is in financial distress. “They have seized all my money, which wasn’t much. I need legal representation against these evil people,” he wrote online.
