Judge Scott McAfee dismissed six of the charges against former President Donald Trump, alongside some of his prominent co-defendants such as former chief of staff Mark Meadows and lawyer Rudy Giuliani. The ruling, issued on Wednesday, criticized the lack of detailed allegations within these counts, specifically regarding the nature of the commission of the underlying felonies.

The dismissed counts largely pertained to accusations of soliciting state officials to violate their oaths of office, with McAfee highlighting the indictment’s failure to specify the precise constitutional violations involved. Despite the abundance of alleged conduct, the judge pointed out that the essential legal elements were not sufficiently detailed, rendering these charges inadequate for the defendants to intelligently prepare their defenses.

Among the counts dismissed were those related to Trump’s efforts to influence Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, including a call to “find” enough votes to overturn the state’s 2020 election results and a letter urging the decertification of the election.

While Trump faces dismissal of these counts, he still remains charged under ten other counts in the case. The judge’s decision allows for the possibility of these charges being refiled with additional details or further clarified in a reindictment process. This development arrives amid expectations for another critical ruling on whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from the case, with a decision anticipated in the near future.

Trump, along with the affected co-defendants, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The decision has been welcomed by Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, who criticized the prosecution’s lack of specificity and labeled the entire case as politically motivated and a form of election interference. The offices of the DA and Secretary Raffensperger have not commented on the ruling.
