A federal judge on Thursday issued a preliminary injunction halting the Trump administration‘s attempt to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in public K-12 schools and universities.
Judge Landya McCafferty blocked a “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education that warned universities they could face civil rights investigations over DEI programs. The injunction also stops a DEI certification mandate for K-12 schools and the use of a newly launched “DEI portal” that encouraged public reporting of school activities.
The lawsuit was filed by the National Education Association, its New Hampshire affiliate, and the Center for Black Educator Development. In her ruling, McCafferty said the administration’s letter likely violates the Constitution and disrupts a previously lawful status quo.
NEA President Becky Pringle accused Trump, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and Elon Musk of politically motivated attacks on public education.
The Education Department is expected to appeal the decision.
