A federal judge has blocked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing Treasury Department records containing sensitive personal data. The injunction follows a lawsuit by 19 Democratic attorneys general against President Donald Trump, alleging his administration unlawfully granted DOGE access to the central payment system, which processes tax refunds, Social Security, and veterans’ benefits.

Judge Paul A. Engelmayer, appointed by President Obama, ordered those with unauthorized access to destroy all downloaded data. A hearing is set for Feb. 14.

New York Attorney General Letitia James argued that DOGE’s access risks security breaches and unauthorized freezes on federal funds. She accused Trump of improperly granting Musk’s team access to private financial information.

The lawsuit claims Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent altered policies to accommodate DOGE, violating federal law. Connecticut AG William Tong called it “the largest data breach in American history.”

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are pushing for a Treasury investigation into DOGE’s activities. The Treasury insists its review is only to assess system integrity.
