House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) warned Monday that the ongoing government shutdown could soon become one of the longest in U.S. history unless Democrats accept the House-passed stopgap funding bill. The shutdown entered its 13th day, already among the lengthiest modern lapses in federal funding.
“We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history unless Democrats drop their partisan demands and pass a clean, no-strings-attached budget,” Johnson said. Democrats have pressed for negotiations on expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits, while Republicans insist healthcare policy changes be excluded from any short-term spending deal.
The shutdown mirrors past standoffs, including the record 35-day lapse under President Trump in 2018–2019 and a 21-day shutdown during President Clinton’s term. Johnson accused Democrats of creating “the Schumer Shutdown,” arguing the GOP bill would immediately restore pay for federal workers.
Some Republicans have criticized Johnson’s decision to keep the House in recess, but he defended the move, saying lawmakers are “doing their best work” for constituents during the funding impasse.
