House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) warned Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “not to be trusted” and poses a serious danger to the U.S. and its allies.
Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union”, Johnson described Putin as an “old-school communist” and part of a “new axis of powers” that includes China, Iran, and North Korea.
His comments come after President Donald Trump’s tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which ended in a public clash over U.S. support for Ukraine.
Following the meeting, Trump declared that Zelensky is “not ready for peace”, claiming Ukraine seeks to use U.S. involvement as leverage. Trump also accused Zelensky of disrespecting the U.S. in the Oval Office, stating he is not welcome back until he is serious about peace.
Johnson defended Trump’s negotiations with Russia, arguing he is trying to end the war but needs cooperation from both sides. However, Trump’s diplomatic approach has drawn criticism for being too accommodating to Putin.
