House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) denied Tuesday that the delay in swearing in Arizona Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva (D) is connected to congressional efforts to release the Jeffrey Epstein files. Grijalva won a September 23 special election to replace her late father, Raúl Grijalva, but has yet to take office.
Democrats allege the delay is politically motivated, suggesting Grijalva could cast a decisive vote for a discharge petition to compel public release of the Epstein records — documents that reportedly mention President Donald Trump. Johnson dismissed the speculation, saying, “It has nothing to do with that at all. We will swear her in when everybody gets back.”
Grijalva’s case has drawn attention after another newly elected Democrat, James Walkinshaw (D-Va.), was sworn in immediately following his election. Democrats, including DNC spokesperson Kendall Witmer, accused Johnson and “Trump’s Republican loyalists” of “stalling” to block transparency.
The House remains out of session amid a government shutdown deadlock over health care funding and ACA subsidies.
