John Bolton, the former national security adviser, criticized former President Trump’s foreign policy approach, specifically regarding Russia, in an MSNBC interview with Jen Psaki. Bolton suggested that Trump’s potential reelection would be celebrated in the Kremlin, labeling Trump as an “easy mark” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite Putin’s past praise for Trump, he recently described President Biden as a “more predictable” leader, indicating a preference for Biden’s election victory. Bolton dismissed Putin’s comments as disinformation, highlighting Trump’s reluctance to criticize Putin, especially in the context of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death, which Biden and others have called a likely political assassination.
Bolton pointed out Trump’s failure to condemn Putin for Navalny’s poisoning in 2020, viewing it as part of a pattern of Trump avoiding criticism of Putin to maintain a perceived good relationship between the U.S. and Russia. He also reflected on the 2018 Helsinki summit, suggesting that Putin’s dominance in conversations with Trump was beneficial due to Trump’s lack of understanding.
Additionally, Bolton raised concerns about Trump’s legal financial troubles, including a $355 million New York business fraud ruling and an $83 million defamation case judgment. He argued that these issues could make Trump susceptible to foreign influence, questioning his fitness for office.
