West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin announced Friday morning that he has left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent, sparking speculation about his future political plans.

“My commitment to do everything I can to bring our country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation,” Manchin wrote in a post on X.

In 2022, Manchin stated he would not seek reelection to the Senate, leading to rumors about a possible presidential run. He dispelled those rumors in February, stating, “I will not be seeking a third-party run; I will not be involved in a presidential run. I will be involved in making sure that we secure a president who has the knowledge, has the function, and has the ability to bring this country together.”

Manchin has been a vocal critic of the Democratic Party and a significant obstacle to many of President Joe Biden’s legislative priorities. He has previously noted that both major political parties have moved towards partisan extremism, leaving their constituents “behind while jeopardizing our democracy.”

Manchin’s announcement leaves many questions unanswered. He did not disclose whether he will continue to caucus with Democrats in the Senate, where they hold a slim majority, nor did he indicate if he plans to run for higher office in the near future.

Manchin served as the governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 before being elected to the Senate.
