Newly elected Senator Jim Justice of West Virginia will delay joining the Senate until January 13, choosing to complete his term as governor before assuming his new role. Justice, a Republican, emphasized the decision avoids a temporary shuffle of state leadership and allows him to finalize gubernatorial duties.
Justice, who won the Senate seat previously held by retiring independent Joe Manchin, cited his commitment to a smooth transition, saying, “I’m going to be your governor until our new governor is sworn in.” Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey will take office January 13, avoiding a scenario where temporary leadership would pass through multiple state officials.
Justice’s Senate seat is one of four flipped by Republicans in the recent election, giving the GOP a 53-seat majority. Fellow West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito praised his decision, saying she looks forward to working with him to advance Republican policies.
