Jewish Voice for Peace protesters filled the Trump Tower lobby on Thursday, demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University activist arrested by immigration authorities.

Khalil, a Syrian-born permanent U.S. resident married to an American citizen, was detained outside his New York City apartment on Saturday and is now in an immigration detention center in Louisiana. He has not been charged with any crime but faces deportation under President Donald Trump’s directive to expel students engaged in “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.”

Protesters, wearing red shirts reading “Jews say stop arming Israel”, chanted for Khalil’s release before police arrested them after warnings to vacate the building. Among those detained was actor Debra Winger, who accused the administration of “co-opting antisemitism.”

Khalil, who recently completed his Columbia master’s degree, has become a symbol of free speech advocacy amid nationwide protests against his arrest. His supporters argue his detention is politically motivated.
