WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump’s defense of Tucker Carlson after the talk show host interviewed white nationalist Nick Fuentes is generating unease among Jewish conservatives who have long supported the president’s pro-Israel positions. The reaction highlights growing divides inside the Republican Party over how to handle extremist figures.
Trump said Carlson “should be able to interview whom he likes,” declining to criticize Fuentes when asked. A former Trump White House staffer told The Hill that many Jewish Republicans are “confused,” noting Trump’s extensive ties to Jewish staff, family members, and political allies. Some had hoped for a clear rejection of Fuentes.
The controversy intensified after Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts defended Carlson, prompting internal backlash, an apology, and a board resignation. Other conservatives, including Sen. Ted Cruz and former Vice President Mike Pence, sharply condemned Carlson for giving Fuentes a platform.
Trump has previously faced criticism for a 2022 dinner with Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago, an encounter he said he did not anticipate. Fuentes responded to Trump’s latest remarks with public gratitude.
Jewish Republican leaders remain divided. Some argue Trump’s comments reflect a commitment to free speech, while others warn the issue risks weakening support for him on matters related to Israel and antisemitism. Progressive Jewish organizations say the debate underscores the broader normalization of extremist rhetoric in national politics.
