A heated exchange erupted Wednesday between House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) over a Republican-backed plan to end the ongoing government shutdown. Lawler confronted Jeffries outside a Capitol news conference, urging him to support a bipartisan measure extending Affordable Care Act premium tax credits for another year.
Jeffries rejected the demand, telling Lawler he was “embarrassing” himself and to “keep your mouth shut.” The argument reflected deep partisan divisions over healthcare funding and government spending, now entering its eighth day of deadlock.
The dispute centers on the GOP’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, designed to temporarily sustain ACA subsidies while reopening the government. Democrats insist that long-term healthcare affordability must be part of any funding deal.
President Trump weighed in on Truth Social, blaming Democrats for the shutdown, while Jeffries accused Republicans of ignoring rising healthcare costs. Lawler later posted that Jeffries chose “partisanship over governance.”
Negotiations continue as hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain unpaid and healthcare costs threaten to rise without congressional action.
