House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) stated Democrats will not support Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) if his position faces a vote in January. Jeffries cited Johnson’s handling of government funding, including abandoning a bipartisan agreement under pressure from President-elect Trump, as a major factor.
Jeffries warned of Johnson’s vulnerability, saying, “There will be no Democrats available to save him… from themselves,” referencing GOP divisions.
The House narrowly averted a government shutdown Friday with Johnson’s short-term funding measure, extending operations through March 14. While most Democrats supported it, many criticized the exclusion of bipartisan provisions like increased community health center funding.
Jeffries emphasized Democrats would push for these priorities in upcoming negotiations, noting the short-term resolution includes disaster aid, farm assistance, and an extension of the farm bill.
