House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Monday accused President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) of running a “pedophile protection program” by refusing to release government files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking at the Capitol, Jeffries said the delay in swearing in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) was politically motivated to block a vote compelling the Department of Justice to make the documents public.
Grijalva, who won a special election in Arizona on September 23, would be the 218th signature on a bipartisan discharge petition led by Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY). The petition seeks to force the DOJ to release Epstein’s remaining files, which Bondi’s department has so far withheld.
Johnson has denied political motives, arguing the House cannot seat new members during the ongoing government shutdown. The Speaker has said Grijalva will be sworn in once normal sessions resume.
The Justice Department maintains that only Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were criminally liable, a conclusion that has angered both Democrats and some Trump supporters who believe the full client list remains hidden.
