Special counsel Jack Smith has requested a court order to prevent former President Trump from making public statements that could endanger law enforcement officials involved in his classified documents case. Smith’s request follows Trump’s false claim that President Biden was ready to “take him out,” twisting the terms approved for law enforcement during a search of his Mar-a-Lago residence for classified records.
Prosecutors argue that Trump’s false claims could expose law enforcement agents, some of whom will be trial witnesses, to threats or harassment. Attorney General Merrick Garland refuted Trump’s accusations, calling them “extremely dangerous” and clarifying that the Justice Department’s standard policy limits the use of force.
Trump faces 40 charges of mishandling classified documents and obstructing their retrieval after leaving the White House. He has pleaded not guilty. The case, initially set to begin on May 20, has been indefinitely postponed by Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, due to issues with handling the classified documents at trial.
