An Iranian doctoral student at the University of Alabama was detained in March during President Trump‘s immigration crackdown, sparking fear among the U.S. campus’s international student community. Alireza Doroudi was arrested by armed officers shortly after celebrating Persian New Year, leaving his fiancée Sama Ebrahimi Bajgani and peers stunned.
Doroudi legally entered the U.S. in 2023 on a student visa, which was later revoked without explanation. Though university officials reportedly told him he could remain if enrolled, he was taken into custody without prior notice. He now awaits a deportation hearing in Louisiana, over 300 miles from campus.
University officials said they offer support for affected students. Doroudi’s lawyer says no evidence supports the government’s claim that he poses a national security threat.
His case is one of over 1,000 international student visa revocations since March, according to an AP review. Iranian students now say they feel unsafe and under surveillance, with some comparing the fear to conditions in Iran.
