Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained Alireza Doroudi, an Iranian doctoral student at the University of Alabama, adding to a wave of arrests of international students under the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
University officials confirmed Wednesday that a doctoral student had been detained off campus, though federal privacy laws limit what details can be disclosed. Doroudi, who holds a valid student visa, was identified by the university’s student newspaper, The Crimson White. He was detained Tuesday, but the reason for his arrest remains unclear.
Doroudi’s detention follows that of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish Ph.D. student at Tufts University, earlier this week. The Trump administration is reportedly using a provision allowing the deportation of noncitizens deemed threats to U.S. foreign policy, often in connection with pro-Palestinian activism.
“This is a cold, vicious dagger through the heart of UA’s international community,” said the University of Alabama College Democrats in a statement.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet commented on Doroudi’s arrest.
