A first of its kind in the nation, the new law requires social media companies to put in place a mechanism for reporting hate speech.
The law was pushed to the forefront following the deadly supermarket shooting in Buffalo earlier this year. Social media companies must also disclose how they respond to such complaints when reported.
The law defines hateful conduct to mean the use of social media to “vilify, humiliate, or incite violence.”
“We know that social media is where we are seeing a number of problems with inciting problems, perpetuating acts of violence where things are shared on social media,” said Democratic Assemblywoman Pat Fahy (D-Albany) who sponsored the bill in the state Assembly.
However, a lawsuit filed last week is looking to challenge the new law.
