House Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans to forward articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate upon Congress’s return to Washington in April. The move, scheduled for April 10, will initiate a Senate trial overseen by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who intends to swear in senators as jurors the following day. The House previously impeached Mayorkas in a tight party-line vote, accusing him of mishandling the southern border’s security, marking the first time in nearly 150 years a Cabinet secretary could potentially face this level of censure.

While the Republican-led House has pushed forward with the impeachment, the likelihood of conviction in the Democratic-majority Senate remains slim. Critics argue the House has not substantiated claims that Mayorkas’s actions meet the constitutional standard for high crimes and misdemeanors. Schumer has openly criticized the House’s inability to provide evidence of impeachable offenses.

Johnson, however, maintains that Mayorkas’s actions constitute a breach of public trust and a willful disregard for federal immigration laws, justifying the impeachment. Despite skepticism from some GOP senators about the strength of the House’s case, the impending trial will spotlight Republican concerns over the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Johnson has called for a comprehensive public trial to underline the importance of addressing what he terms as “the devastation caused by Biden’s border catastrophe.”
