A Yahoo News/YouGov poll of 1,482 U.S. adults from March 8 to 11 reveals the significant influence former President Donald Trump has on Republican views regarding a bipartisan border-security deal. Initially, 64% of Republicans supported the $20 billion agreement aimed at enhancing asylum criteria, increasing border security personnel, and implementing measures for expelling migrants more efficiently. However, this support dropped to 34% upon learning Trump opposed the deal.
The poll also showed a marked difference in attitudes among 2020 Trump voters, with support falling from 57% to 26% when informed of Trump’s stance. Conversely, Democratic support slightly increased when Trump’s opposition was noted, though the overall American support decreased from 58% to 48%.
The deal, which sought to address issues such as the surge in illegal border crossings, fell through after Trump criticized it, suggesting it would be detrimental to Republicans and beneficial to Democrats. Misinterpretations around the deal’s provisions, particularly the threshold for closing the border, were highlighted, yet fact-checkers have clarified these misconceptions.
The situation at the U.S.-Mexico border is perceived as a significant problem by a majority of Americans, with bipartisan elements of the deal initially receiving broad support. President Biden, attributing the bill’s failure to Trump’s political interests, remains committed to seeking a solution, reflecting the urgency of addressing what many see as a crisis at the border.
