Tensions in Chicago escalated this weekend as state and local officials condemned aggressive immigration raids that residents say involved children being zip tied and tear gas deployed in residential neighborhoods. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said agents targeted individuals linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, but offered few details about arrests.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker ordered an investigation into claims of excessive force, calling the reported use of “military-style tactics” on children unacceptable. Democratic lawmakers demanded an end to the raids, while community groups said U.S. citizens were among those detained. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defended the actions, calling the mission “extremely dangerous.”
The village of Broadview, home to an immigration processing center, filed a federal lawsuit demanding the removal of an 8-foot fence agents erected, claiming it violates safety laws. Civil rights groups have also accused agents of breaching a 2022 consent decree restricting immigration arrests in several states.
Protests continued across Chicago as residents called for accountability and federal restraint.
