Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) has barred individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack from holding state jobs. His directive follows President Donald Trump’s sweeping pardons for those convicted.
Pritzker cited the rioters’ offenses, including assaults on law enforcement, threats against Congress, and property destruction. “No one who attempts to overthrow a government should serve in government,” he stated in a letter to Illinois’ Department of Central Management Services.
Illinois employs about 53,000 state workers. A Chicago Sun-Times report estimates that over 50 Illinois residents were affected by Trump’s pardons, including those still facing prosecution. At the time of the pardons, 43 of 53 Illinois residents had been convicted.
Trump pardoned Proud Boys and Oath Keepers convicted of seditious conspiracy, as well as others involved. Over 1,500 people were arrested in connection with Jan. 6, with more than 140 police officers assaulted.
