Arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico fell 39% in January, marking a sharp decline amid President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration enforcement efforts. The Border Patrol recorded 21,593 arrests, down from 47,316 in December, the lowest level since May 2020, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The White House credited the drop to the “Trump Effect,” pointing to a series of executive actions, including the suspension of asylum under an “invasion” declaration. Border czar Tom Homan noted that only 229 arrests occurred in a 24-hour period—figures he has not seen since 1984.
Homeland Security officials say they aim to bring illegal crossings to zero. The administration also launched a multimillion-dollar video campaign featuring Secretary Kristi Noem, warning migrants that they will be deported and permanently barred from reentry. The latest measures follow efforts by Mexico and the previous Biden administration to curb crossings.
