Minneapolis, Minnesota — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D–Minn.) was attacked during a town hall Tuesday night when a man rushed toward the stage and sprayed an unknown liquid from a syringe, prompting an immediate response from security and local police.
According to Minneapolis police, officers at the event observed a 55-year-old man use a syringe to spray the substance toward Omar before he was quickly tackled and arrested. The suspect, identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, was booked into county jail. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details about the substance were immediately released.
Despite the attack, Omar was not injured and chose to continue the town hall for nearly 30 minutes after the incident. Addressing the audience, she emphasized resilience and refused to allow the disruption to end the event. Her office later confirmed she was unharmed, stating that she would not be intimidated from continuing her work.
The attack occurred as Omar was speaking about abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and calling for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. It comes amid a broader rise in threats and violence against elected officials nationwide. The U.S. Capitol Police reported that investigations into threats against members of Congress increased sharply last year, reaching nearly 15,000 cases.
Omar has long been a frequent target of threats, with prior reporting indicating she has received more death threats than any other member of Congress. The incident has renewed concerns among lawmakers and law enforcement about political violence and security at public events.
