Savannah, Ga. — U.S. immigration agents conducted a massive raid Thursday at Hyundai’s electric vehicle mega-site in southeast Georgia, detaining 450 people and halting construction on a new battery facility.
The operation targeted the 3,000-acre complex west of Savannah, where Hyundai manufactures electric vehicles and is building a battery plant in partnership with LG Energy Solution. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posted on X that it joined ICE, HSI, the FBI, DEA, and other agencies in the “immigration enforcement operation” at the Bryan County site.
Federal officials say the raid stemmed from an investigation into “unlawful employment practices and other serious federal crimes.” Hyundai’s battery joint venture, HL-GA Battery Company, said it is fully cooperating and has paused construction.
South Korea’s foreign ministry responded swiftly, expressing concern about the rights of its citizens and calling for caution during U.S. enforcement.
Video from the scene shows officers halting work and reading a search warrant aloud. Hyundai confirmed that manufacturing operations were not affected.
ICE raids have increased at farms, factories, and businesses nationwide under his second-term immigration agenda.
