Federal agents shot a woman in Chicago after an immigration enforcement operation turned violent, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Officials said the woman attempted to ram her car into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after they were surrounded by about 10 vehicles, one of which had an armed driver.
DHS said the woman, who has not been publicly identified, had posted threats online against federal law enforcement before the confrontation. Agents opened fire in self-defense after being boxed in and targeted by the vehicle.
Following the shooting, a crowd gathered at the scene, prompting agents to deploy pepper balls and tear gas to disperse protesters. No federal agents were seriously injured, DHS said.
The incident comes amid rising tensions in Illinois tied to the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” which has led to hundreds of immigration-related arrests statewide and drawn protests outside federal facilities in the Chicago area.
