Hunter Biden is set to face trial this week on charges of failing to pay over $1.4 million in federal taxes from 2016 to 2019, during a period marked by his struggle with drug addiction. The trial, which begins with jury selection on September 5 and opening statements on September 9, follows his earlier conviction in June on felony gun charges.

The prosecution plans to use details of Biden’s “extravagant” lifestyle, including spending on strip clubs and sex workers, to argue that his personal expenditures influenced his failure to file and pay taxes. Biden’s defense, led by attorney Mark Geragos, contends that his addiction impaired his decision-making, making it impossible for him to “willfully” commit the alleged crimes.

U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi has allowed evidence of Biden’s spending to be presented but will regulate its use to avoid undue prejudice. The trial’s outcome could lead to significant penalties, particularly since Biden is no longer a first-time offender, following his gun conviction earlier this year.
