The U.S. House of Representatives, led by Republicans, narrowly passed a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, highlighting immigration as a pivotal issue in the upcoming elections. The vote ended at 214-213, accusing Mayorkas of failing to enforce U.S. immigration laws and making false statements to Congress. This event marks a rare occurrence, being only the second impeachment of a Cabinet member in U.S. history and the first in nearly 150 years.
Despite the impeachment by the House, the prospect of Mayorkas being removed from office is unlikely due to the Democratic majority in the Senate. The impeachment comes against the backdrop of increased migrant flows across the U.S.-Mexico border since President Joe Biden took office, which Republicans attribute to Mayorkas’ policies. The decision reversed a prior legislative defeat for Speaker Mike Johnson, with Representative Steve Scalise’s vote proving decisive.
Critics, including Mayorkas and President Biden, argue the impeachment lacks evidence and constitutional grounds, viewing it as a politicized act rather than a genuine accountability measure. Immigration remains a top concern for voters, second only to the economy.
