A bipartisan majority in the House voted 224-198 Thursday to censure Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) after he was escorted out of President Trump’s congressional address for repeated heckling.
Ten Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the censure, introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), which accused Green of a “breach of proper conduct” for shouting that Trump lacked a mandate to cut Medicaid. Green ignored warnings from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), leading to his removal by the sergeant-at-arms.
Green, who was present for the vote, joined fellow Democrats in singing “We Shall Overcome” as the censure resolution was read.
Key Context:
- Green is the first lawmaker censured for heckling a president during a speech to Congress.
- Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) was reprimanded in 2009 for shouting “you lie!” at then-President Obama, a less severe punishment than censure.
- Some Democrats argued that Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) faced no consequences for heckling President Biden during past State of the Union addresses.
