Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson was overwhelmingly rejected by both parties. Greene, a staunch Trump supporter, accused Johnson of various “transgressions” including passing a $95 billion national security package with aid for Ukraine and relying on Democrats for power. Despite boos from colleagues, Greene persisted, labeling Johnson’s leadership as “pathetic, weak and unacceptable.”
The motion to vacate the Republican speaker was quickly tabled by Majority Leader Steve Scalise, resulting in Johnson retaining his position with a 359-43 vote. Johnson stated, “As I’ve said from the beginning, and I’ve made clear here every day, I intend to do my job. And I’ll let the chips fall where they may. In my view, that is leadership.”
This marks the second time Republicans have attempted to oust their own speaker, highlighting the party’s internal strife. Despite the temporary resolution, Johnson’s reliance on Democratic support to survive the vote could incite further criticism within his party. However, the threat of another ouster attempt remains.
Trump, while supporting Johnson, also expressed his admiration for Greene, stating, “I absolutely love Marjorie Taylor Greene.” Greene’s move has put her colleagues in a difficult position, forcing them to publicly back the speaker and align with Democrats. Despite the political risks, Greene remained defiant, stating, “I’m proud of what I did today.”
Democrats, led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, showed their exhaustion over the far-right antics by voting to table Greene’s resolution. Jeffries stated, “Our decision to stop Marjorie Taylor Greene from plunging the country into further chaos is rooted in our commitment to solve problems.” However, Democrats clarified that their support for Johnson was a one-time occurrence and not a promise of an enduring partnership.
The move has also posed risks for Greene, who has a significant following and close ties with Trump. Other Republicans have expressed their frustration with Greene’s tactics, with Rep. Dusty Johnson stating, “They’re pretty good at getting attention, but they have not been recognized for their ability to get things done.” Rep. Mike Lawler called for Greene and her ally Rep. Thomas Massie to be punished for their actions.
