House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing threats to his leadership but has declared he will not resign, referring to himself as a “wartime speaker”. This comes as House Republicans aim to vote on four key items without further party division.
Opponents of a measure to restock U.S. weapons, enabling more unused weapons to be sent to Ukraine, have threatened to remove Johnson. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) expressed support for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) effort to oust Johnson.
Dissatisfaction with Johnson’s leadership has grown since he replaced former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Critics point to the government funding deal and his support for a controversial 9/11-era spying provision. Republicans have also struggled to influence the Biden administration’s immigration policies, a condition for approving further Ukraine aid.
Greene has not yet called for a vote on Johnson’s future. Johnson remains unconcerned about the threat, emphasizing the need for party unity amidst various crises.
