House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced plans for House Republicans to investigate the disbanded Jan. 6 Select Committee, accusing it of manipulating evidence to harm former President Trump. Johnson criticized President Biden for awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal to former committee members Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), labeling them as having “intentionally and repeatedly lied to the American people.”
Johnson alleged that the committee destroyed evidence and manufactured a false narrative. He stated the investigation into the committee will be “fully funded” into the next Congress. Republicans had previously released a report accusing the committee, formed under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, of politicizing the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and using it to blame Trump for the Capitol violence.
The GOP report also recommended a criminal investigation into Cheney, accusing her of witness tampering for alleged contact with former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, a claim Cheney has denied. Cheney, in response to earlier criticisms, defended the committee’s work and condemned Trump’s inaction during the Capitol attack, calling him a “cruel and vindictive man.”
