The House of Representatives passed President Trump’s sweeping fiscal package early Thursday in a 215–214 vote after a marathon 23-hour Rules Committee hearing. The legislation now moves to the Senate, where changes are likely.

Dubbed the “big, beautiful bill” by Trump, the 1,100-page proposal would extend his 2017 tax cuts, raise the federal debt limit, and cut $1.5 trillion in federal spending. Key provisions include imposing work requirements on certain Medicaid recipients and repealing tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act.

Despite internal Republican division, House Speaker Mike Johnson negotiated successfully with hardliners to ensure passage. Two Republicans—Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson—voted no, and Andy Harris voted present. All Democrats opposed the bill.

Johnson met with Trump at the White House the day before the vote. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the discussions “productive.”

The vote occurred just before Congress was scheduled to recess for Memorial Day. The bill now faces a more uncertain future in the Senate.
