The House narrowly passed Donald Trump’s sweeping “Big Beautiful Bill” early Thursday in a 218–214 vote, sending the $4.5 trillion package to the president’s desk. The bill makes Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent, enacts deep cuts to Medicaid and nutrition aid, and injects $150 billion into immigration enforcement.
Every Democrat opposed the measure, joined by two Republicans, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY). GOP leaders faced internal resistance, with Freedom Caucus members staging a six-hour protest over Senate revisions that added $1 trillion in cost.
Democrats denounced the bill as fiscally irresponsible and morally cruel. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries called it an “assault on health care,” while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned that ICE’s expanded role could become a “paramilitary force.”
Vice President JD Vance downplayed the bill’s fiscal provisions, emphasizing immigration crackdowns as its core mission: “Everything else… is immaterial compared to the ICE money.”
Trump is expected to sign the legislation with a July 4 ceremony.
