House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) narrowly passed a budget resolution Thursday that was endorsed by President Donald Trump, overcoming internal Republican resistance. The 216–214 vote moves GOP leaders closer to advancing a major fiscal package that includes $4 trillion in tax cuts and a $5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling.
The path to passage was rocky. Johnson pulled a planned Wednesday vote after opposition from fiscal conservatives who argued the plan lacked sufficient spending cuts. In response, Johnson and the White House promised Republicans $1.5 trillion in future reductions.
Despite those assurances, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) joined Democrats in voting against the measure. The resolution’s passage marks a key victory for the Trump-aligned leadership as it works to reshape federal fiscal policy through aggressive tax cuts and long-term deficit restructuring.
