The House voted 310–58 on Thursday to pass a resolution honoring Charlie Kirk and condemning political violence, with all Republicans in favor and Democrats split. Ninety-five Democrats supported the measure, 58 opposed, and 38 voted present.

Democratic leaders told members they could vote according to conscience, reflecting divisions over how to address Kirk’s legacy. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) said he could not “celebrate” Kirk, describing him as racist. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also voted no, citing Kirk’s past statements about the Civil Rights Act and the Paul Pelosi attack. She argued the resolution falsely portrayed him as a unifying figure.

The resolution, introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson, praised Kirk as a “courageous American patriot” committed to debate and civic engagement. The National Republican Congressional Committee quickly criticized Democrats who voted against it, calling them “radical and unhinged.”

Republicans contrasted the outcome with a June resolution unanimously condemning the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman.

Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged with his murder after authorities linked him to the weapon through DNA and text records.
